If you've been keeping up with our coverage from International CES at Las Vegas, you may have heard about the HAPIfork, an electronic utensil that zaps you for eating too quickly.
Here are some more details: the fork features a circuit that connects the handle of the utensil to the prongs at the end. Once you put the fork in your mouth to take a bite, it counts one serving. By interacting with both your hand and mouth, the fork can keep track of how many servings you eat.
The HAPIfork also measures how long it takes you to eat a meal, the average amount of servings you consume per minute and the total number of fork servings.
So what happens if you eat too fast? A LED light on the handle pops up, and the fork gives a gentle buzz to alert you to slow down.
"When we want to control the pace at which we're eating, we have to focus on counting the bites or watching the time," reads a FAQ on the HAPIfork website explaining the need for the utensil. "When we are sharing a meal with friends or being distracted by TV for example, it is very difficult to remain conscious of the pace at which we're eating."
The fork is waterproof, and you can pop out the electronic key inside the fork to run it in the dishwasher.
The device includes an online dashboard to track your progress, a mobile app, coaching program and online social game. It will sell for $99, and will go on sale during the third quarter of this year.
